In a significant move to bolster economic integration across the continent, Ghana’s outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has announced that all African passport holders can now travel to Ghana visa-free. The new policy took effect on January 1, 2025.

President Akufo-Addo made the declaration during his final address to parliament on Friday, January 3, 2025, as he prepares to step down on January 6 after serving two terms in office.

Advancing African Integration

“With this decision, Ghana joins countries like Rwanda, Seychelles, Gambia, and Benin in promoting seamless travel for African citizens,” Akufo-Addo stated. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envision a connected and integrated Africa by 2063.

“This is the logical next step to the AfCFTA and the workings of the largest trading bloc in the world,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of removing barriers to foster trade, tourism, and economic collaboration across the continent.

The visa-free policy marks another milestone in Ghana’s leadership role in promoting Pan-African unity and facilitating cross-border cooperation.
