Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV) has announced his intention to join the 2027 Lagos State governorship race, reaffirming his ambition to lead the state.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Rhodes-Vivour, who previously ran under the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections but lost to incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), confirmed his plans.

“By God’s grace, yes,” he stated when asked about his participation in the 2027 election. However, he did not clarify if he would contest under the Labour Party or a different political platform.

GRV emphasized the need for opposition parties to unite, warning against fragmentation. “If all parties do not come together, it is going to be a waste of time running in 2027 because there is a full state capture happening in this country now,” he remarked.

Criticism of Tinubu’s Reforms

During the interview, Rhodes-Vivour also critiqued the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira. He argued that these policies have worsened economic conditions for ordinary Nigerians while benefitting a select group of elites.

“The people are experiencing unprecedented hardship. Today, over 70 percent of people’s income is spent on transportation and food. They’ve not even started to think about accommodation,” he said.

He accused government officials and the President’s associates of being the primary beneficiaries of the reforms, adding, “The only people that seem to be benefitting from these reforms are maybe the bankers, the people in government, and the President’s friends.”

Rhodes-Vivour reiterated his commitment to strengthening the Labour Party and ensuring it remains a formidable platform for political change in Lagos State.
