The Federal Government has released ₦50 billion to settle outstanding earned allowances for academic and non-academic staff unions in federal universities, fulfilling a pledge made by President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced the disbursement on Wednesday, describing it as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector. In a statement by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, the minister emphasized that the payment reflects Tinubu’s resolve to transition Nigeria into a knowledge-based economy through strategic investments in education.
“This intervention reaffirms the President’s belief in the potential of Nigerian youth and the critical role educators play in shaping their future,” the statement read. Alausa also expressed gratitude to the unions for their cooperation, noting that the country is currently experiencing one of its longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent years due to improved government-union relations.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to ending strikes in universities, stating, “Keeping our children in school is non-negotiable.” The Ministry of Education pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure access to quality education for all Nigerian students.
The release of the funds marks a key milestone in the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the education sector.
