Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared that upcoming local government elections will serve as a referendum on Minister Nyesom Wike’s controversial tenure. In a fiery interview with Channels TV, the lawmaker asserted that FCT residents are united in their resentment toward Wike’s leadership style.

“The local government elections early next year will be when FCT residents show the minister whether they accept or reject his governance,” Kingibe stated. She accused Wike of displaying “disregard and contempt” toward indigenous populations while failing to address their needs.

The senator, who has emerged as Wike’s most vocal critic in the National Assembly, claimed the minister misunderstands the political dynamics of the territory. “Only those who’ve lived here long understand the FCT’s independent spirit. What unites us now is our collective resentment toward the minister’s approach,” she revealed.

Kingibe’s comments highlight growing tensions between Wike and FCT stakeholders since his appointment last year. The former Rivers governor has faced criticism for his brash governing style and perceived marginalization of local communities in development plans.

Political analysts suggest the LG polls could become a proxy battle between Wike’s camp and opposition forces, with Kingibe positioning herself as the voice of dissent. The minister’s supporters, however, dismiss the claims, pointing to ongoing infrastructure projects across the territory.

With both sides digging in, the 2026 local elections may determine whether Wike’s “bulldozer approach” to FCT governance survives its first major electoral test.
