In a stark caution to President Bola Tinubu, former Kaduna lawmaker Shehu Sani has urged against replicating the appointment pitfalls of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sani emphasized the critical need for competence in governmental appointments to achieve meaningful outcomes.
During Buhari’s tenure, spanning from 2015 to 2023, Sani criticized what he described as rampant nepotism, asserting it resulted in ineffective governance across critical sectors such as security, economy, education, and healthcare. He highlighted long tenures of unproductive ministers and the retention of underperforming service chiefs as detrimental practices that stifled progress and perpetuated inefficiency.
“President Tinubu must avoid the missteps of President Buhari,” Sani cautioned, underscoring the imperative to prioritize competence over political considerations in appointments. He urged for a departure from the previous administration’s approach, which he claimed neglected the necessity for skillful leadership in favor of prolonged incumbencies.
Regarding the northern region of Nigeria, Sani lamented the failure of political leaders, particularly from the area, to leverage their positions for developmental gains. He criticized the misuse of political power, citing widespread underdevelopment across the region despite decades of political influence.
Sani’s admonition comes amid growing scrutiny over the trajectory of governmental leadership and policy effectiveness in Nigeria, amplifying calls for a recalibration in strategic appointments to foster national progress.
