Simon Field, Deputy Head of Mission at the UK Deputy High Commission in Lagos, has cautioned Nigerians against making sudden or suspicious deposits into their bank accounts ahead of UK visa interviews. Speaking on Nigeria Info’s morning programme, Let’s Talk, Mr. Field emphasized that such actions raise red flags for visa officers and can lead to visa denial.

He explained that applicants often mistakenly believe they need to show a large sum of money in their accounts overnight, but this can appear suspicious. Instead, applicants should provide transparent and consistent financial information, demonstrating a long-term history of funds.

“There’s no benchmark for how much money you must have,” Mr. Field said. “You just need to show you have enough to cover your expenses while in the UK. Showing a salary or steady income helps, as it indicates you are likely to return.”

He also highlighted that unrealistic financial claims, such as having very little money but planning to stay at expensive hotels, could cause visa officers to doubt the applicant’s credibility.

Despite recent changes in UK immigration policy, Mr. Field reassured Nigerians that the UK remains welcoming, with most visa applications being approved. He encouraged applicants to be honest and well-prepared to improve their chances of success.
