A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigerian Senate to immediately recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, ruling that her six-month suspension was excessive and unconstitutional. The court held that the lengthy suspension deprived her constituents of representation for nearly an entire legislative year.

Presiding Judge Justice Binta Nyako emphasized that while the Senate has disciplinary powers, such actions must not infringe on the constitutional rights of constituents. The court also found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt for violating a court order restricting public comments on the case and fined her ₦5 million.

The judge further directed the senator to publish a formal apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page within seven days. The court upheld Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s refusal to allow her speak during plenary, citing her absence from her official seat.

The ruling challenges the Senate’s disciplinary procedures and underscores the constitutional protections for elected representatives and their constituents. The Senate is expected to comply with the court’s directive and reinstate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan promptly.
