Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the Nigerian government for what he describes as a lackluster approach that is endangering the security gains made against terrorist groups in the North-East region.

In a recent statement, Abubakar expressed deep concern over the resurgence of violence and terrorism, highlighting recent deadly attacks by Boko Haram in Gwoza, Borno State.

Abubakar, a prominent opposition figure and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemned the tragic incidents that claimed the lives of eighteen people and left more than thirty injured.

The attacks targeted a wedding reception, a funeral procession, and a hospital, marking one of the deadliest assaults in the region in recent months.

“It is unfortunate that much of the progress made against the Boko Haram terror sect is being reversed due to the government’s lackluster posture on the frontline,” Abubakar lamented. He called on the Federal Government to take decisive action to prevent the North-East from sliding back into a state of chaos and violence.

The former vice president’s comments come amidst growing concerns over the escalating violence in Nigeria’s troubled North-East, where communities continue to suffer from persistent attacks and instability despite previous military successes against insurgents.

Abubakar further extended his condolences to the families of the victims, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed souls. His remarks underscore the urgent need for robust governmental action to ensure the safety and security of citizens in the region, which has been plagued by terrorism for over a decade.

The Federal Government has yet to respond to Abubakar’s criticisms regarding its handling of the security situation in the North-East. As tensions remain high and the threat of terrorism persists, stakeholders await decisive measures from the authorities to mitigate further violence and restore peace to the embattled region.
