No fewer than 30 students and one teacher were hospitalised following a gas leak at a secondary school in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The incident occurred shortly after the morning assembly when a strange gaseous substance spread across the school premises, causing panic as students and staff began experiencing breathing difficulties. Several of the affected students reportedly collapsed during the incident.
The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they received medical attention. Health officials later confirmed that most of them were in stable condition and responding to treatment.
Authorities said the exact source of the gas has not yet been determined. While some accounts linked the incident to a possible chemical release from the school laboratory, others suggested it may have originated from the surrounding environment.
State officials ruled out the possibility of an explosion or industrial pollution, noting that there are no major industrial facilities in the area capable of causing such emissions.
Investigations have commenced to identify the substance involved and determine its source, as authorities move to prevent a recurrence and ensure the safety of students and staff.
