A four‑storey building under construction collapsed on Friday in the Abule‑Egba area of Lagos minutes after occupants, including students attending tutorials nearby, were safely evacuated. The incident happened at about midday when people noticed cracks in the structure and raised the alarm.

Witnesses said that students attending lessons in a tutorial centre close to the site were quickly alerted and helped to move to safety by passersby and community members before the building gave way. No fatalities were reported, and those in the vicinity at the time managed to get out unharmed, according to residents at the scene.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and rescue teams, arrived shortly after the collapse to cordon off the area, inspect the debris and ensure that no one was trapped underneath. Medical teams were also on standby as a precaution.

The cause of the collapse is not immediately clear, but preliminary observations suggest possible structural failure during construction. Authorities said an investigation would be launched to determine whether building regulations and safety standards were adhered to, and to hold responsible parties accountable if negligence is found.

Local residents expressed relief that the evacuation occurred in time and thanked those who helped alert students and passersby. The collapse has reignited concerns about construction safety and regulatory compliance in rapidly developing urban areas like Lagos.
