President Bola Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to move swiftly and implement measures aimed at reducing food prices across Nigeria.

The directive was disclosed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, during a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents in Abuja.

The President’s directive is focused on ensuring the safe passage of farm produce across transport routes to reduce logistics costs, a major contributor to the current high food prices. Senator Abdullahi emphasized that the FEC committee is already working on promoting the smooth movement of agricultural foods and commodities nationwide.

Nigeria has been grappling with worsening food insecurity since the removal of fuel subsidies, which increased transportation costs, combined with insecurity on major highways disrupting the flow of goods. Despite several government interventions, millions of Nigerians continue to find food prices unaffordable.

The campaign to crash food prices aligns with President Tinubu’s broader vision of achieving food sovereignty—which extends beyond mere availability to guarantee affordability, accessibility, and improved nutrition on a sustainable basis.

To reinforce this vision, the government plans to roll out a Farmer Soil Health Scheme designed to boost agricultural productivity, alongside a revamped cooperative reform initiative aimed at mobilizing resources and empowering rural farmers.

Senator Abdullahi highlighted President Tinubu’s strong interest in cooperatives as essential tools for resource mobilization, economic growth, and raising the livelihoods of members.

This effort complements Tinubu’s earlier declarations during his Democracy Day speech that Nigeria is on track to food sovereignty supported by market-driven growth and strengthened agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

Food inflation remains a critical challenge, with rates hovering around 22.74 percent as of July 2025. The government’s strategic interventions seek to stabilize prices, reduce the burden on vulnerable households, and improve overall food security in Nigeria.
