President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a landmark subsidy to significantly reduce the cost of kidney dialysis for Nigerians. This intervention has decreased the price of each dialysis session from N50,000 to just N12,000, offering vital relief to thousands of patients battling kidney-related diseases.
A statement from presidential aide Sunday Dare confirmed that the subsidy is already being implemented in major federal hospitals across the six geopolitical zones.
The hospitals currently benefiting from this subsidy include Federal Medical Centres in Ebute-Metta (Lagos), Jabi (Abuja), Owerri, and Abeokuta; University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) in Maiduguri; Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); Federal Medical Centre in Azare; University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH); and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
More federal medical centres and teaching hospitals are expected to be added before the end of the year, further expanding access to affordable dialysis services nationwide.
The statement also highlighted that last year, President Tinubu had approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals, as part of efforts to boost maternal healthcare and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
