Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have climbed to 8th place in the latest FIBA Women’s World Rankings following their historic performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan.
This rise from 11th to 8th place, with 640.1 ranking points, makes them the only African team to ever break into the global top 10.
The United States leads the rankings with 880.9 points, followed by Australia and France in second and third, respectively. Nigeria joins Spain and Canada to complete the top eight in the world.
The ranking boost reflects D’Tigress’s recent achievements, including winning their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title a record unmatched by any men’s or women’s African team—and extending their unbeaten run to 29 games since 2015.
Their victory at the Palais des Sports de Treichville secured their seventh AfroBasket crown overall.
This milestone cements Nigeria’s status as Africa’s basketball powerhouse and highlights their growing influence on the global stage of women’s basketball.
Other notable movements in the rankings include South Sudan’s impressive debut with a third-place AfroBasket finish and significant climbs by Lithuania, Lebanon, Indonesia, Iran, and Mongolia in their respective regional tournaments.
