In a remarkable achievement that has brought pride to Nigeria, 15-year-old Miss Faith Odunsi has been named the world’s best mathematics student after winning the Global Open Mathematics Competition.

Representing Nigeria and schooling locally in Ogun State, Faith outperformed top competitors from powerhouse countries including China, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The competition saw participants from across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, with Faith dominating by a wide margin, scoring 40 points when the second runner-up managed 10.

Judges affectionately dubbed her “Calculator” for her exceptional speed and accuracy. Her victory is historic, showcasing the talent and intellectual prowess that Nigerian students possess, despite global competition.

Faith, a final-year secondary school student at Ambassadors School in Ota, Ogun State, credits her success to dedicated preparation with support from her teachers.

She balanced her schoolwork and tournament training meticulously, often studying late into the night. Throughout her academic journey, she has excelled in numerous mathematics competitions, including the National Olympiad, where she was crowned Queen of Mathematics for several years and international contests such as the Kangourou Sans Frontieres and Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad.

Her parents, a medical practitioner (father) and a businesswoman (mother), have expressed immense pride in her achievement, attributing her mathematical talent partly to heredity.

Faith Odunsi’s triumph not only awards her a prize but also positions her as a beacon of inspiration for young Nigerians.

Her success amplifies the message that Nigerian students can compete and excel at the highest global academic levels while being educated at home.

As Nigeria celebrates Faith’s outstanding accomplishment, her story reinforces the potential within the country’s educational system and the importance of nurturing young talents in STEM fields.

This landmark win serves as a call to action to provide greater support and resources to young Nigerians excelling in academics, ensuring more world-class achievements in the future.
