Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari was buried at his family residence in Daura on Tuesday evening following Islamic funeral rites attended by dignitaries from across Africa.

The solemn ceremony, which began at 5:50 p.m., saw President Bola Tinubu, Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and Niger Republic’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine join family members and political associates in paying final respects.

The late president’s body, transported from London where he died on July 13 at age 82, arrived in Daura at 4:33 p.m. via military ambulance. The funeral procession included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, business magnate Aliko Dangote, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari’s burial marks the culmination of a remarkable journey that saw the retired Major General transition from military ruler (1983-1985) to two-term democratically elected president (2015-2023).

Known for his austere lifestyle and disciplined approach to governance, the late leader’s final rites reflected his simple preferences despite the high-profile attendance.

The Federal Government had earlier declared seven days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across all public buildings.

Security was tightened throughout Daura as thousands of mourners gathered to witness the interment of Nigeria’s 15th head of state, whose legacy continues to shape the nation’s political landscape.
