The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, demanding that he formally resign from the party following his involvement in a newly formed opposition coalition.

In a statement released by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the group condemned Obi’s participation in the coalition, describing its members as “power mongers” interested in personal gain rather than the welfare of Nigerians. The faction reiterated that the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership remains firmly opposed to joining the coalition.

The statement accused Obi of holding secret meetings to persuade Labour Party members to defect to the coalition, though some members have reportedly refused to follow him. It warned that any party member involved in the coalition must resign from the Labour Party within 48 hours, emphasizing that the party will no longer tolerate individuals with “dual agendas” or divided loyalties.

The faction dismissed the coalition as a gathering of “old, recycled, desperate and frustrated politicians,” arguing that the vision of a “new Nigeria” cannot be realized through such alliances. It urged members to remain loyal to the Labour Party, which it described as the true vehicle for youth-driven change and national renewal.

This ultimatum highlights ongoing divisions within the Labour Party as Nigeria’s opposition landscape continues to shift ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Abure faction’s stance signals a firm rejection of coalition politics and a commitment to maintaining the party’s independence and identity.
