The Ondo State government has announced plans to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the immediate past governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who died on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.
The government, through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, revealed that a coroner’s inquest will be launched following petitions from concerned citizens, professional bodies, and residents of Akeredolu’s hometown, Owo. These petitions raised troubling inconsistencies about the official account of the former governor’s death.
Ajulo emphasized that the public has the right under the Coroner’s Law of Ondo State to demand clarity when foul play is suspected or questions remain unanswered. He assured that due process will be followed without political interference or sentiment, and that no individual will be presumed guilty.
The Attorney-General noted that decisions such as inspecting the governor’s remains or summoning individuals rest with the Coroner Judge, and the law will be allowed to take its course. He called for civility and responsibility in handling the matter, respecting the late governor’s legacy and maintaining peace in the state.
Ajulo affirmed that the government of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is committed to ensuring truth and justice prevail, stating, “No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection.”
