Former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has stated that no politician can secure Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 without the backing of the northern region. Speaking during a video interview in Kaduna over the weekend, Baba-Ahmed emphasized the region’s pivotal role in determining the country’s political future.
“The north will define its political direction in the next six months,” Baba-Ahmed declared. “If the rest of the country wants to align with us, fine. If not, we will go our own way. But one thing is certain—no one can become Nigeria’s president without northern support.”
Baba-Ahmed expressed concern over the nation’s current state, urging northerners to reject divisive politics and demand accountable leadership. “We need a government that understands our challenges and can provide solutions,” he said. “After eight years under Buhari, we became wiser. Now, under another administration, we are still suffering. Is crying all we know how to do?”
Reflecting on past crises, he recalled how the Boko Haram insurgency united northerners across religious and ethnic lines. “Before Buhari’s presidency, Boko Haram attacked mosques, churches, Abuja, and Lagos. That period forced northern unity. Today, no politician can just show up and expect blind loyalty. Who are they?” he questioned.
He cautioned against further marginalization of the north, warning that electoral manipulation would have severe consequences. “If anyone plans to rig the 2027 elections, they should be careful. The north is watching—elders, masses, and interest groups are reaching a breaking point. The injustice must stop,” he said.
While advocating for competence over identity politics, Baba-Ahmed stressed the need for credible leadership. “We are done with voting based on religion or ethnicity. That era is over. We want a leader who can solve our problems, wherever they come from,” he concluded.
The remarks come amid growing political realignments ahead of the next general elections, with the north expected to play a decisive role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
