Dieko Afolayan, son of renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, has addressed the wave of online criticism surrounding his identity and appearance following his public appearance at the premiere of his father’s latest film, Recall.

His demeanor at the event sparked mixed reactions, with some social media users questioning his sexuality and accusing him of adopting Western ideals. Others, however, condemned the backlash as cyberbullying.

“It’s disturbing how Dieko Afolayan gets dragged for his body type. Y’all bullied him to the point where he’s consciously adjusting how he stands. Grow up and leave the boy alone,” one social media user wrote. Another commented, “Dieko Afolayan is so fine. That’s why y’all be hating.”

In response, Dieko took to Instagram to assert his individuality and ambition. “I will keep introducing myself until people know me. If you’re looking for where hard work meets success, welcome to my page,” he stated.

Describing himself as hardworking and self-aware, he expressed frustration over societal pressures to conform. “I come from a line of stars, but I am also an individual trying to find myself in a world that demands conformity. It’s annoying,” he said.

Dieko also emphasized his desire to inspire young people, revealing that many of his role models are women. “I want to be a role model for boys and girls out there. I am unapologetic about who I am, my values, and my standards,” he affirmed.

His response has further fueled conversations on individuality, self-expression, and societal expectations in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
