Betsy Obaseki, the wife of the Edo State Governor in Nigeria has called on women who are waiting for the fruit of the womb not to consider themselves barren, but to see themselves as fruitful and proud mothers of children that would arrive in God’s time.

Speaking during a Zoom meeting with Edo women in the Diaspora over the weekend, Betsy Obaseki addressed over 200 women who joined the session from various countries. She was accompanied by Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, the wife of the PDP candidate for the upcoming September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

The Edo First Lady’s remarks came in response to a viral video where Senator Adams Oshiomhole made comments about her being childless. In her address, Obaseki urged the women to focus on the deeper purpose of their lives beyond motherhood.

Obaseki emphasized, “It is important that we as human beings seek to have deeper perspectives and purpose in life. Everyone is created by God to actualize their purpose in life. Once we have that mindset, we are happy with our lives and know that we are moving on in actualizing God’s purpose.”

She also shared her personal experience of loss and grief, saying, “To those of you who like myself had conceived and had miscarriages, or painful evacuations of babies who died in our wombs, or children who died at birth or at different stages in life, and as we speak today do not have children to show for the trauma and pains — my word of comfort to you is that you are not barren.”

Obaseki continued, “I dare to call you fruitful. You and I are potential, prospective proud mothers of lively children. The children will come in God’s time. So, hang in there. Hold your head up high. Enjoy the life that God has given you in the meantime.”

She encouraged the women to find their purpose, saying, “Being fruitful is not limited to childbearing. It is about impacting lives and creating positive change in society. Women can fulfill God’s purpose in many ways beyond motherhood,” She said.
