The Yoruba Party in the UK has announced Dr. Olusola Oni as its candidate for the vacant parliamentary seat in Peckham.
The Yoruba Party, a political group representing the Yoruba community in the United Kingdom, was registered with the Electoral Commission in February 2024. The party aims to empower Yoruba people in the UK and amplify their contributions to the country’s political and socio-economic spheres.
In a press release issued recently, the party outlined its mission to support the Yoruba community’s growth and representation in UK politics.
“Our primary purpose is to encourage, energize, and assist Yoruba people living in the UK to achieve their full potential,” the statement reads.
“We also aim to provide a political voice for the UK Yoruba community and broader ethnic minority interests.”
Dr. Olusola Oni, the Yoruba Party’s leader and candidate for the seat, is a distinguished retired NHS Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.
His extensive academic and professional background includes qualifications from the University of Ibadan, University of Leicester, and University of Cardiff, as well as fellowships from surgical colleges in Edinburgh, West Africa, Nigeria, and England.
With a notable career in both medical and legal fields, Dr. Oni has served as an elected member of the General Medical Council, a college examiner, and a senior lecturer in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Leicester.
His judicial experience includes a tenure as a Senior Medically Qualified Judicial Office Holder in the UK from 2003 to 2019.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Oni holds the Yoruba chieftaincy title of Baasegun Alabe and has authored books on ancient Yoruba law and medicine, reflecting his deep cultural heritage.
The Yoruba Party emphasized that Dr. Oni’s candidacy represents a significant step towards greater political representation for the Yoruba community and ethnic minorities in the UK.
