Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge of alleged fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bello was arraigned before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Wednesday.

The EFCC accused Bello and two co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, of involvement in a ₦110 billion fraud. Oricha and Hudu, who are the 2nd and 3rd defendants in the case, have been granted administrative bail by the EFCC.

Bello’s Court Appearance

Dressed in a white kaftan and a blue cap, the former governor appeared in court accompanied by EFCC officials. The charges stem from investigations into alleged financial irregularities during his tenure as governor of Kogi State.

Legal Proceedings

At a previous hearing on November 14, the EFCC requested a 30-day extension to secure Bello’s appearance in court. Speaking on the matter, the EFCC noted that while his co-defendants were cooperating with the commission, Bello had been absent during earlier summons.

During Wednesday’s session, Bello maintained his innocence. His legal team argued for a fair trial and emphasized his readiness to clear his name.

EFCC’s Stance

The EFCC stated that the charges highlight the agency’s commitment to addressing financial crimes, particularly those involving public officials. A spokesperson for the commission said, “This case underscores our dedication to ensuring accountability and justice, irrespective of the position of the accused.”

The trial is expected to proceed in the coming weeks as the court reviews evidence and arguments from both parties.
