The world’s oldest person, Tomiko Itooka, has passed away at the age of 116. The announcement was made on Saturday, January 5, 2024, by the mayor of Ashiya, Ryosuke Takashima, who praised her for inspiring generations with her resilience and longevity.
“Ms. Itooka gave us courage and hope through her long life. We thank her for it,” Mayor Takashima said in a heartfelt statement.
Itooka died on December 29 at a nursing home in Ashiya, where she had resided since 2019. Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, she witnessed a century of global transformations, including two world wars, numerous pandemics, and remarkable technological advances.
She became the world’s oldest person in August 2024, following the death of Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera at age 117.
Itooka, one of three siblings, enjoyed a simple lifestyle in her later years, savoring bananas and Calpis, a popular milky soft drink in Japan. She is survived by her four children and five grandchildren, who carry forward her legacy.
The mayor’s statement also highlighted her role as a symbol of hope for Japan, a country known for its remarkable longevity. However, Japan faces growing challenges with an aging population, which is driving up healthcare and welfare costs amid a shrinking workforce.
Tomiko Itooka’s life spanned more than a century, making her a living witness to historic events and advancements. Her passing marks the end of an era, leaving a legacy of resilience and vitality that continues to inspire.
“She lived through wars, pandemics, and groundbreaking technological advancements. Her journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit,” the mayor concluded.
