Frank Caprio, a United States judge famed for his compassion in the courtroom and a massive social media following, has died at the age of 88 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The announcement was made on his Instagram page, which had 3.2 million followers, describing him as “beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”

Known as the ‘nicest judge in the world’, Caprio served on the bench in Providence, Rhode Island, for nearly four decades.

He became a viral sensation through videos of his kind and understanding approach to justice, which have been viewed over a billion times. The later years of his career were featured in the TV show Caught In Providence.

Caprio’s gentle approach contrasted sharply with other TV judges who were often confrontational. Notable clips showed him dismissing a traffic ticket for a bartender with a low hourly wage and waiving $400 in fines for a grieving mother whose son had died.

He used his platform to highlight inequality in the justice system, emphasizing how low-income Americans face civil challenges like healthcare, eviction, and traffic violations without adequate support.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee paid tribute to Caprio’s warmth and compassion, calling him “a symbol of empathy on the bench” and praising how he showed what justice can be when tempered with humanity.

Caprio had shared a final message from his hospital bed, asking for prayers during his illness shortly before his passing.
