A coalition of over 150 women’s rights organizations, Womanifesto, has called for the immediate release of Chioma Okoli, a woman detained since September 2023 for alleged defamation against Erisco Foods Limited. In a statement, the group condemned Okoli’s continued detention, which has resulted in the loss of her pregnancy and livelihood.
The group, comprising organizations such as Women Advocates and Research Documentation Centre (WARDC), Purple Woman Foundation, and ActionAid Nigeria, criticized Erisco for prioritizing profits over the health and wellbeing of Nigerians. They demanded justice for Okoli and an end to the harassment and intimidation of women who speak out against injustice.
Okoli’s detention has sparked outrage among women’s rights activists, who see it as a clear case of corporate intimidation and victimization. The group accused Erisco of using its influence to silence Okoli, who had raised concerns about the company’s products and labels.
The women’s rights coalition called on the government to investigate Erisco’s products and labels, ensuring they meet safety and health standards. They also demanded compensation for Okoli’s losses and an end to the company’s harassment of women who speak out against its practices.
This development highlights the challenges faced by women who dare to challenge corporate power and demand accountability. The women’s rights groups’ solidarity with Okoli sends a strong message that women will no longer be silenced or intimidated by corporate interests.
The case has sparked a wider conversation about corporate accountability, women’s rights, and the need for a more just and equitable society. As the women’s rights coalition continues to advocate for release of Chioma Okoli and justice, it remains to be seen how Erisco and the government will respond to these demands.
