A tragic incident occurred in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa, where a 40-year-old woman set herself on fire after her husband divorced her. The incident was confirmed by DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state.
According to Shiisu, the woman, who lived in Garin Mallam village, doused herself with petrol and ignited the flames, leading to her death on the outskirts of the village. The police responded promptly to the report, and a team from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters arrived at the scene to confirm the incident. The woman’s charred remains were taken to a hospital and later released to her family for burial.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the woman had been suffering from depression for several months following her divorce. In response to the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmadu Abdullahi, urged the public to turn to faith and seek guidance from elders when faced with difficult situations, to prevent such tragedies.
