Key leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including serving governors, former governors, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, held an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday night to address the party’s deepening crisis following a wave of high-profile defections.
The closed-door meeting, which took place at the Bauchi State Governors’ Lodge in Asokoro, brought together top stakeholders to strategize on stabilizing the party ahead of crucial internal elections and potential coalition talks.
Sources at the meeting confirmed that discussions focused on three major issues: the growing exodus of party members, the prolonged dispute over the position of National Secretary, and preparations for the party’s national convention scheduled for August. There were also talks about the possibility of forming alliances with other political groups ahead of future elections.
Among those in attendance were Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). Several former PDP governors still loyal to the party also participated in the deliberations.
The meeting comes just weeks before the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) gathering on May 27, where critical decisions about leadership and strategy are expected to be finalized.
Political analysts suggest that the PDP is at a crossroads, with internal divisions threatening its cohesion. Recent defections, particularly among mid-level officials, have raised concerns about the party’s ability to present a united front in future elections.
When approached for comments after the meeting, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, the host of the gathering, declined to give details but assured reporters that the party was working towards a resolution. “We are committed to strengthening the PDP and ensuring it remains a formidable force in Nigerian politics,” he said.
As the party navigates these challenges, observers are watching closely to see whether the PDP can overcome its internal disputes or if further defections will weaken its position as the country’s main opposition party.
