Ahead of the September 21 Edo State governorship election, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has made it clear that he will not support Governor Godwin Obaseki. Wike also stated that he will not back the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who has been endorsed by Obaseki.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike described Governor Obaseki as ungrateful, saying, “The one I supported, it never helped anything. Rather I was insulted.” He expressed regret over his previous support for Obaseki in the last election, declaring that he now feels foolish for having done so.

Wike, while affirming that he is not aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) or its candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emphasized that his choice not to support Obaseki or Ighodalo does not make him a “mole” within the PDP. He added that his appointment as FCT Minister had been openly communicated with the PDP leadership at both state and national levels, refuting claims of engaging in anti-party activities.

Wike’s statement has added to the tension ahead of the Edo poll, leaving political observers questioning how his stance will affect the dynamics of the election.
