In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of financial misappropriation and gross misconduct.
The impeachment, which was unanimous, marked the end of Obasa’s 10-year reign as Speaker, making him the longest-serving Speaker in the House’s history.
Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was sworn in as the new Speaker, becoming the first female Speaker in the House’s history. The Assembly also removed the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, and dissolved all House committees.
The impeachment motion, moved by Femi Saheed, cited Section 92(2) (C) of the Constitution, accusing Obasa of gross misconduct, poor leadership, and authoritarianism. The motion was adopted by 32 of the 40-member House through a voice vote.
Obasa’s removal was reportedly due to his alleged mismanagement of funds and lack of transparency in the Assembly’s management. His leadership style was also criticized for being high-handed and undemocratic.
The impeachment has been seen as a move to safeguard the image of the Lagos State House of Assembly and the state as a whole.
Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency 1, stated that the lawmakers agreed to take this step to ensure a new direction for the House.
In related developments, armed security personnel took over the Assembly premises, and some miscreants attempting to invade the complex were arrested. The House also suspended the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, replacing him with Abubakar Taiwo Ottun as acting Clerk.
The impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and it remains to be seen how the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, will steer the House in its future endeavors.
