Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared that the union will not be intimidated by external pressures following his appearance at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Ajaero, accompanied by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), activist Deji Adeyanju, and senior NLC officials, arrived at the IRT office at 10:17 a.m. and left shortly after 11:15 a.m.
Ajaero was invited by the police over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. Speaking at the Labour House after his police visit, Ajaero emphasized the NLC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers, describing the allegations as baseless.
“We can’t be intimidated,” Ajaero asserted. “The allegations against us are baseless, and we have nothing to hide.”
Reflecting on the historical challenges faced by labour leaders, Ajaero mentioned past experiences of intimidation, including his time with Femi Falana during Abacha’s regime. He assured that the NLC remains steadfast in advocating for workers’ welfare, including pressing for the implementation of the minimum wage and other essential demands.
Ajaero explained that his appearance before the police was to ensure transparency and to address the unfounded accusations against him and the NLC. He maintained that the union will continue to fight for the welfare of workers and stand firm against any attempts to weaken the labour movement.
“Our resolve is stronger than ever,” he added. “We will continue to champion the cause of workers across the nation, no matter the obstacles.”
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Ajaero confidently dismissed them as an effort to undermine the labour movement. He reassured that the union remains united and focused on its mission, undeterred by any attempts to challenge its efforts.
