Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized that Nigerian parliamentarians were not elected to engage in conflicts with the Executive branch but to collaborate in fostering policies that drive national development.

Speaking in a documentary marking two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Akpabio said lawmakers must focus on bipartisan cooperation rather than political antagonism. He remarked, “When elected into the National Assembly, whether in the Senate or the House of Representatives, your constituents will not give you boxing gloves. It’s not a boxing tournament. You are there to work in a bipartisan manner for the interest of Nigeria.”

Akpabio highlighted the cordial relationship between the National Assembly and the Executive over the past two years, attributing it to a shared vision for the country’s progress. He questioned, “If you spend all your energy fighting the Executive, who will work for Nigeria?”

He also noted that this administration is unique in Nigerian history, with the President, Vice President, and First Lady all being former senators. This common background, he said, has helped strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between the legislative and executive arms of government.

Akpabio’s remarks underscore the importance of unity and constructive engagement among Nigeria’s political leaders to achieve sustainable development and effective governance.
