The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed reports that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has proposed a new national minimum wage of N105,000. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified that these claims are false.
“The Honorable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has not proposed N105,000 minimum wage. The contrary story being disseminated is false,” Onanuga stated.
Meanwhile, Podium News reported on Thursday that Minister Edun, following an earlier directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, presented a template with the cost implications of a new minimum wage to the President. This submission came after President Tinubu instructed the government team in the tripartite committee to present the cost implications of an affordable, sustainable, and realistic new minimum wage within 48 hours.
This directive followed a two-day strike by organized labor, demanding an increase in the minimum wage. The government aims to address these demands while ensuring any new wage structure is economically viable and sustainable.
