Reports of vote-buying characterized the ongoing Ondo State governorship election, with political parties allegedly inducing voters with cash ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000 per vote. These activities were observed across multiple polling units, particularly in Akoko and other areas.

At various polling stations, voters were seen openly displaying their ballot papers to party agents positioned strategically to monitor voting preferences. This breach of electoral conduct underscored the influence of money in the election process.

Arrests in Connection with Electoral Malpractice

Security operatives, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), made efforts to curb electoral malpractice. A suspected vote-buyer was arrested at Ward 4, Polling Unit 007, near St. Stephen’s Primary School in Akure. The suspect was reportedly caught with two bags of cash intended to bribe voters.

Collaborative Manipulation Across Party Lines

Reports indicate a level of coordination among political party agents, as they were seen collaborating while their canvassers moved around polling stations distributing cash to secure votes.

Concerns Over Electoral Integrity

These incidences have raised concerns over the integrity of the electoral process. Stakeholders, including opposition candidates, have called for investigations and action by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure credible elections.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s democratic system, where financial inducement undermines the sanctity of the ballot and public confidence in governance. Further updates on the election process are awaited.
