Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football just two months after joining Italian club Como. The 31-year-old French international made the announcement on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning, reflecting on his illustrious career and the difficult decision to hang up his boots.

Varane joined Como on a free transfer in July 2024 but sustained a knee injury just 23 minutes into his debut during a Coppa Italia match, which left his return to action uncertain. Como coach Cesc Fabregas had indicated last month that Varane’s future was unclear due to the injury.

In his retirement message, Varane expressed immense pride in his career, stating, “I have taken on many challenges, risen to occasion after occasion… I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing.” He added, “I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.”

Varane, who won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid and the 2018 World Cup with France, played 360 games for the Spanish giants, including 69 under coach Carlo Ancelotti. He also had a stint at Manchester United before moving to Como.

Despite his retirement from playing, Varane mentioned that he would continue his association with Como in a non-playing capacity, hinting at his upcoming role in the club.

The announcement comes as Como celebrated their first Serie A victory in 21 years, defeating regional rivals Atalanta 3-2 in Bergamo on Tuesday night.
