Usha Vance, wife of Ohio Senator JD Vance, is poised to make history as the first Indian American and Hindu second lady in the United States. With former President Donald Trump projected to win the 2024 election alongside JD Vance as vice president, Usha will assume a prominent role in the White House. At 38, she will also be the youngest second lady since 1949.
Raised in a Hindu household in San Diego by Indian immigrant parents, Usha met JD at Yale Law School. They married in 2014 and have three children. Usha previously worked as an attorney, clerking for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, and recently left her position at Munger, Tolles & Olsen after JD was announced as Trump’s running mate.
Throughout the campaign, Usha maintained a low public profile, focusing on supporting JD rather than engaging actively in the political spotlight. She expressed that while there are issues she’s interested in, she has yet to determine her specific focus areas as second lady. Known for her diverse background and differing political views from her husband, Usha has emphasized that their relationship thrives on respectful discussion and “give and take” of opinions.
