The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reiterated that using tinted glass on vehicles remains illegal in the country, citing a law prohibiting the practice. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized this on Saturday in response to an X (formerly Twitter) user’s inquiry.
Adejobi explained that while the enforcement of the ban on tinted glass was suspended due to a halt in the issuance of tint permits, the underlying prohibition remains valid. “There is a ban on it. It’s even a legal matter because there is a law on it. The police only suspended the enforcement of the law because we had suspended the issuance of the tint permit,” he stated.
He added that the police could exercise discretion in cases where tinted vehicles are suspected of being used for criminal activities. “The use of tint on vehicles in Nigeria is an offence, and many have abused it,” he said.
This statement appears to contradict an earlier announcement made in February 2024, when the NPF lifted the ban on tinted glass following public outcry and logistical challenges in implementing the policy. At the time, the police justified the initial ban by linking tinted windows to criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and the illegal transportation of weapons.
While the status of enforcement remains ambiguous, vehicle owners are advised to comply with existing regulations to avoid penalties.
