The United States government has launched an investigation into how past aid allocated to Nigeria and other countries was utilized, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria announced on Tuesday.

In a statement on its verified X handle, the mission emphasized that “comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients.”

The development follows allegations by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry that USAID has inadvertently funneled up to $697 million annually to terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram. These claims have sparked concerns among security experts and diplomats in Nigeria.

The investigation also coincides with President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend all foreign aid for 90 days after assuming office in January. He cited concerns over global destabilization and misalignment with U.S. interests, calling for a thorough review of USAID health funding.

The U.S. government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that aid serves its intended purpose while condemning the actions of Boko Haram and other terrorist groups operating in Nigeria and the surrounding region.
