The United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the recent Israeli strike on a displaced persons camp in Rafah, Gaza, which killed dozens of people, including women and children. The attack has sparked widespread international condemnation, with many countries and organizations calling for an immediate end to the violence.

According to reports, the Israeli military launched a strike on Sunday night, targeting two senior Hamas members, which resulted in a fire that ripped through a displacement center, killing at least 45 people, including civilians. The attack has been widely condemned, with many calling it a “massacre” and a “war crime”.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his outrage over the attack, saying “there is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop.” The UN humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, has also condemned the attack, saying it was “utterly unacceptable” and that “we’ve seen the consequences of this tragic accident”.

The emergency meeting of the UN Security Council has been called by Algeria, and is expected to take place on Tuesday. The meeting comes as Spain, Ireland, and Norway are set to formally recognize a Palestinian state, a move that has been slammed by Israel as a “reward” for Hamas.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with thousands of people displaced and many more in need of humanitarian assistance. The Israeli military operation in Rafah has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, and has been widely condemned by the international community.

In a statement, the Israeli military said it was launching a probe into the attack, but many have expressed skepticism over the investigation, given the military’s history of conducting internal inquiries that often clear themselves of wrongdoing.

The international community has called for an immediate end to the violence and for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire to be put in place. The situation remains volatile, with many fearing further escalation and loss of life.
