In response to the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State, the United Nations has allocated $6 million in aid. This decision comes after a joint mission, including UN agencies, NGOs, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, visited the city over the weekend.
The Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, announced that the funds will support affected communities, many of whom have been displaced multiple times by conflict. “We are providing hot meals, facilitating air drops of food to isolated areas, and trucking in water,” Fall said.
Additionally, the aid includes water and sanitation hygiene services, water purification tablets, and hygiene kits for women and girls. “We are also providing emergency health and shelter services to address immediate needs,” Fall added.
The floods, triggered by an overflow from the Alau Dam, have damaged over 125,000 hectares of farmland. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is also working with donors to secure further funding to assist those affected.
