The United Nations has declared July 7 of every year as ‘World Amotekun Day’ to recognize the contributions of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps, particularly in Ondo State.
This decision, influenced by Amotekun’s impact on crime reduction across the southwest region, was announced in Akure by Adetunji Adeleye, commander of the Ondo Amotekun.
According to the statement, Ambassador Dr. Markwili Mgbara, Director of Information and Communications for the International Association of World Peace Advocates, presented the affiliation certificate under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) consultative status and the International Association of World Peace Advocacy.
The certificate affirms the recognition of Ondo Amotekun as a trained security unit affiliated internationally, with expectations for collaboration with various UN agencies.
Established in 2019, Amotekun aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, especially those promoting peace and security by 2030.
The UN acknowledged Amotekun’s successes in curbing crime, supporting farmers, ensuring highway safety, and protecting lives and property in the South-West region.
Amotekun is now expected to participate in several global UN security and human rights meetings, including the United Nations’ 80th Anniversary event slated for September 22, 2025, in New York.
Adeleye expressed gratitude to God and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for creating an environment where Amotekun could thrive, recalling the agency’s challenging beginnings when insecurity kept farmers from their fields and hindered business activities. He noted improved security and economic recovery due to Amotekun’s efforts and assured continued collaboration with other security agencies to maintain safety for residents, commuters, and farmers. While affirming that no society is entirely crime-free, he emphasized the substantial progress Ondo State had made in achieving security.
