
The United Kingdom government has announced plans to nominate Dapo Akande, a professor of Public International Law at the University of Oxford, for the 2026 election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Joanna Roper, the UK’s Ambassador to The Netherlands and representative to the ICJ, confirmed the nomination, highlighting Akande’s extensive legal expertise and experience in international law. Akande, who was elected to the UN International Law Commission in 2021, has also received joint support from Nigeria, Japan, Kenya, and Slovenia.
Expressing gratitude on social media, Akande said, “It is an honour to be the United Kingdom’s intended nominee for election to the International Court of Justice in 2026.”
Born in Ibadan, Nigeria, Akande holds a law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and has served as counsel in various international legal cases and as a consultant for organizations such as the United Nations and NATO.
