Keir Starmer will become Britain’s new prime minister on Friday, July 5, 2024 after his centre-left Labour party secured a landslide victory in the general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

Rishi Sunak conceded defeat, stating, “I take responsibility for the loss. Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides.”

European Council President Charles Michel congratulated Starmer on a “historic election victory” and expressed eagerness to work with the new Labour government. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, the EU’s incoming foreign policy chief, emphasized the UK’s commitment to common security.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Labour’s win “convincing” and affirmed that the UK and Ukraine would “continue to be reliable allies through thick and thin.” French President Emmanuel Macron underscored the importance of cooperation with Britain on security, technology, and climate.

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris anticipated strong relations, describing the UK and Ireland as “close neighbours and friends.” Israel’s President Isaac Herzog offered “warmest congratulations” and looked forward to deepened ties and collaboration on regional peace.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Starmer as a “friend” and anticipated “working constructively” with his administration. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral relations.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store highlighted continued cooperation on energy, security, and trade. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson remarked on the strength of the “Swedish and British strategic partnership.” Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo extended “heartfelt congratulations,” noting the UK’s role as a key partner in security and economics.

In his farewell address, Sunak said, “I have heard your anger,” and announced his intention to step down once a new Conservative leader is found. He reflected on his premiership and expressed gratitude to his family for their support, emphasizing the UK’s strength and resilience.
