Sue Gray, the Chief of Staff to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has resigned from her position and will take on a new role as the Prime Minister’s envoy for nations and regions.

In a statement released by Downing Street on Sunday, October 6, 2024, Gray’s departure was confirmed, with her replacement announced as Morgan McSweeney, who previously served as Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Starmer expressed gratitude for Gray’s service, acknowledging her critical role in both opposition and government. “Sue has played a vital role in strengthening our relations with the regions and nations,” Starmer said. “I am delighted that she will continue to support that work in her new capacity.”

Gray’s resignation follows reports of a salary dispute, with revelations that she earned more than Starmer himself. The BBC’s political editor previously highlighted the tensions over her pay, which fuelled speculation about a power struggle within Downing Street.

Despite the internal challenges, Starmer praised Gray’s efforts in preparing Labour for government and overseeing the party’s initial programme of change. “She has given invaluable support and helped us get started on our agenda for the country,” he added.

Her resignation marks a significant shift in Downing Street’s leadership, as the UK government continues to focus on strengthening regional ties across the nation.
