South African singer Tyla’s self-titled debut album has been moved from the R&B category to the Pop category at the upcoming Grammy Awards, according to reports from the Hollywood Reporter.
The album, originally submitted for Best R&B Album, was reassigned by the Recording Academy’s R&B screening committee to compete in the highly competitive Best Pop Vocal Album category.
If nominated, Tyla will become the first African artist to compete in the Pop category. Her album will face strong competition from heavyweights like Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet.
Reacting to the news, an excited Tyla took to X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I make it all.” Earlier this year, she made history by winning the first-ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her hit single “Water.”
Tyla’s debut into the pop category has sparked excitement and anticipation for what could be another groundbreaking moment in her career.
