The Think Yoruba First (TYF) organization has engaged the Lagos State Ministry of Culture and Tourism in a crucial meeting to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged appropriation of Yoruba cultural heritage by one Ms. Uzo.

At the heart of the discussions was the unauthorized commercial use and misrepresentation of Adìrẹ fabric and the cultural expression of Òwanbẹ, both of which TYF described as vital elements of Yoruba identity.

The group stressed that such appropriation not only undermines Yoruba cultural values but also erodes its economic and historical significance.

TYF further called on Lagos State to clearly position its cultural identity as Yoruba Culture, instead of what it described as the diluted label of “Lagos Culture.”

Responding, officials of the Ministry confirmed that an investigation into Ms. Uzo’s activities is ongoing, noting that other stakeholders had also raised similar concerns.

The Ministry assured TYF that the matter would be handled with seriousness, with measures taken to safeguard Yoruba cultural heritage.

Both parties also discussed the need for greater collaboration in promoting and protecting indigenous traditions.

The Ministry welcomed TYF’s advocacy efforts, while TYF reaffirmed its readiness to support policy development, cultural protection frameworks, and awareness campaigns.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with assurances that the case of cultural appropriation is under active review.

TYF pledged to remain a strong voice against the exploitation and erosion of Yoruba heritage.
