In a fresh wave of political realignments, two members of the Nigerian House of Representatives have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the defections during Tuesday’s plenary session, reading letters from the lawmakers on the floor of the House. The defectors are Jallo Mohammed, representing Igabi Federal Constituency, Kaduna State, and Adamu Tanko, representing Gurara/Suleja/Tapa Federal Constituency, Niger State.

Both legislators cited internal crises and divisions within the PDP as the primary reasons for their departure, claiming that the party’s instability was hampering their ability to serve their constituents effectively.

“This unfortunate turn of events has left me with no choice but to seek a more stable political platform through which I can better serve the interests and aspirations of my constituents,” Mohammed stated in his letter. He also praised Speaker Abbas’s leadership, describing it as inspiring and aligned with his legislative and constituency development goals.

Similarly, Tanko explained that his decision followed “careful consideration and consultation” with his constituents.

However, House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda strongly opposed the defections, arguing that there was no valid evidence of a crisis in the PDP that warranted such a move.

This latest defection adds to the growing list of opposition lawmakers shifting allegiance to the APC. In recent months, several members of the PDP and Labour Party (LP) have joined the ruling party, fueling speculations about further political shakeups ahead of the 2027 elections.
