Two police officers have been killed and three others left unconscious following a violent clash with members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, in the Wuse area of Abuja. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, was described by the FCT Police Command as unprovoked.
According to the FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the Shiites attacked the officers at a checkpoint with machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives. The attack resulted in the destruction of three police patrol vehicles.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, condemned the attack and assured the public that several arrests have been made. He pledged to bring all those involved to justice and stated that the situation has since been brought under control, with normalcy restored in the area. Further updates will be communicated by the FCT Police Command.
