At least 21 people have been killed following violent unrest in Mozambique after the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party’s election victory on Monday. The opposition and its supporters, alleging election rigging, have staged widespread protests, escalating into deadly clashes.
Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda announced on Tuesday that 78 people have been arrested so far, and security has been heightened nationwide. “The armed and defense force will increase its presence in critical and key points,” Ronda stated during a public address on TVM.
Frelimo, Mozambique’s long-dominant political party, has repeatedly faced accusations of electoral fraud from opponents and observers, which it denies.
Protesters have erected burning barricades in multiple locations, including Luis Cabral township in the capital, Maputo. Demonstrators demand transparency and justice, claiming the election outcome undermines democratic principles.
