The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced its firm stance against accepting a slight increase to the ₦60,000 new minimum wage proposed by the Nigerian government.
TUC President Festus Osifo made this clear during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
Osifo emphasized, “We also told them that it’s not that we’d get to the table and you start adding ₦1, ₦2, ₦3,000 as you were doing and we got some good guarantees here and there that they would do something good.”
The TUC, alongside the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), had initiated an indefinite strike on Monday, demanding a better wage for workers. While the organized labour demanded ₦494,000, the government’s proposal stood at ₦60,000.
Following a meeting between the government and labour, the strike was suspended, and President Bola Tinubu directed Finance Minister Wale Edun to assess the financial implications of a new minimum wage within 48 hours.
