In his first broadcast interview since winning the November 2024 election, President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to ending birthright citizenship, which currently grants U.S. citizenship to anyone born on American soil under the 14th Amendment.
Speaking with NBC, Trump outlined his plan to tackle immigration, stating, “We’re going to have to get it changed. We’ll maybe have to go back to the people, but we have to end it.” He expressed a strong intention to deport undocumented immigrants, even those with U.S. citizen family members, marking a continuation of his hardline stance on immigration.
Trump also discussed his approach to the “Dreamers” program, stating he was willing to collaborate with Democrats to support young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. He further revealed plans to pursue pardons for individuals convicted in connection with the January 2021 Capitol riot, denouncing their treatment in prison as “filthy” and “disgusting.”
“These people are living in hell. I’ll be acting very quickly, first day,” Trump emphasized, outlining his approach upon taking office next month.
